Polybutylene and Reston's housing
The 1980–1999 share here is 37%, above the Virginia figure of 31%. That ranks 11th highest of the 35 Virginia cities we profile. Not every home from those years has polybutylene, but enough do that buyers, inspectors and insurers in Reston ask about it.
Look for gray (sometimes blue or black) flexible pipe stamped PB2110 at the water heater, under sinks or at the main shutoff. Homes of the same era in nearby Fairfax, Sterling, Vienna raise the same question.
In Virginia: Older homes in Northern Virginia, Richmond and Hampton Roads have galvanized lines and cast iron drains.
Permits
Full replacement is a repipe and normally needs a permit.

Do insurers in Virginia ask about polybutylene?
Some do, and some limit coverage or charge more for homes that still have it. Ask your insurer directly, and keep any repipe invoice to show the pipe was replaced.
