Hard Water & Filtration

Hard water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium that leave scale in water heaters, tankless units, fixtures and appliances. Treatment ranges from a whole-house softener to a reverse osmosis system for drinking water.

Hard Water & Filtration FAQ

Do I need a softener or a filter?

A softener removes hardness minerals that cause scale. A carbon filter improves taste and chlorine. Reverse osmosis purifies drinking water at one tap. Many homes in hard-water areas use a softener plus RO.

How do I find out how hard my water is?

Your water provider's annual water quality report (the Consumer Confidence Report) lists hardness, often in grains per gallon or mg/L. Above about 7 grains per gallon (120 mg/L) is generally considered hard. On a well, a plumber or lab can test it.

How often do RO filters need changing?

Pre-filters usually every 6 to 12 months and the membrane every few years, depending on water use and whether the water is softened first.

Is a whole-house filter the same as a softener?

No. A filter reduces chlorine, taste and sediment. A softener removes hardness minerals. Many homes in hard-water areas use both, with the filter first.
