Des Plaines's older sewer laterals
Pre-1980 housing here is 71%, above the Illinois figure of 64%. That ranks 20th highest of the 57 Illinois cities we profile. Clay pipe lets roots in at the joints, cast iron scales and cracks, and the line from the house to the street belongs to the homeowner in most places.
Only 45% of homes are single-family detached, so many sewer problems involve a shared building line. Check with your HOA or landlord before booking work.
In Illinois: Basements and heavy spring rain make sump pumps, backup pumps and overhead sewers common.
Permits
Excavation in the yard or street needs a permit, and someone has to call 811 first to get utilities marked.
